Four Tips for Simplifying Your Move into Independent Living

<![CDATA[
A practical guide to preparing for your next chapter

Moving into a retirement community is an exciting and transformative experience that can bring a whole new level of joy and fulfillment. Preparing for a move, however, can feel like a big undertaking. Over the years, our homes are naturally filled with meaningful belongings, memories, and keepsakes. While some items may not have significant monetary value, they almost certainly have sentimental value – things that are practically impossible to replace.

Taking time to organize and thoughtfully decide what to bring can make the transition smoother and far less stressful.

After many years of helping residents and their families prepare for a move into senior living across Arizona, we’ve gathered a few practical tips that consistently make the process easier. From organizing and prioritizing to visualizing how your new apartment will come together, these ideas can help you approach the move with confidence and clarity.

Gather Your Team and Keep Everyone in the Loop

Preparing for a move is much easier with support. Talk with family members, friends, or trusted neighbors who may be willing to help you sort through belongings or simply offer encouragement along the way.

Your leasing team at Fellowship Square is also a great resource. They work with new residents every day and can offer helpful insights, floor plans, and practical advice as you prepare for your move. Our team members are happy to be your sounding board, and with their support, you can embrace this new adventure with confidence and excitement.

When everyone is well-informed, the rest of the road is much smoother. That is, unless you enjoy spirited debates on moving day regarding which items should go on the truck. Or come back off...again.

Organize, Visualize & Plan Ahead

One of the easiest ways to start sorting through your home is with a simple system of colored sticky notes.

Before you begin, ask the leasing team for a floor plan of your new apartment. Seeing the layout makes it much easier to picture how furniture and favorite pieces will fit in your new space.

Next, gather five different colored sticky notes. Assign each color a specific decision:

Green: items you absolutely can’t live without.

Blue: items you would like to take if you have room.

Pink: Keepsakes to pass along to loved ones

Yellow: items you plan to sell

Orange: items to donate

As you walk through your home, place a sticky note on larger items and group smaller belongings into labeled boxes or trays. This approach keeps everything organized and prevents sticky notes from ending up scattered throughout the house.

Bonus tip #1: For keepsakes, write the person's name on the pink sticky note.

Bonus tip #2: Write a simple contents list on the outside of each box. On your first morning in your new apartment, it will be much easier to find the essentials – like your coffee maker.

Click to Download and Print: Organize, Visualize, and Plan Worksheet

Give Yourself Time to Adjust

Sorting through belongings can be both physically and emotionally tiring. It helps to pause and give yourself time to process decisions before moving on to the next step.

Once you’ve marked items and mapped out your furniture layout, step back and let the plan settle for a day or two. A little distance can make it easier to feel confident about what stays and what moves on.

This is an opportunity to eliminate the items that no longer serve you while creating a space that truly reflects you and what makes you happy. If a favorite chair, piece of artwork, or family keepsake brings you joy, it deserves a place in your new home. If that includes your bright green recliner, then go for it!

Selling Belongings Safely: Yard Sale or Estate Sale?

If you plan to sell some items before you move, it’s important to do so safely.

Be cautious about inviting people you don't know to your house – even if only in your front yard. Hosting a yard sale can work well for some households, though it’s best to have friends or family nearby to help manage the sale and keep an eye on things.

Another option that many people find helpful is working with an estate sale company. These professionals typically handle sorting, pricing, and staging items for sale, and marketing the sale.

Typically, estate sale companies base their fees on the dollar amount of items sold, and their services can be well worth it. And because they research item values and attract serious buyers, estate sales can often yield better results for valuable items.

If you’re considering hiring an estate sale company, here are a few helpful tips:

Interview two or three estate sale companies before making a decision

Ask to review their agreement before signing anything, and make sure it clearly outlines how they will be paid and how they price your items.

Confirm the company is licensed and insured.

Check online reviews: This is a helpful way to gauge a company's reputation from previous clients.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions about their process and fees

One strategy many families find helpful is scheduling the estate sale after the move. This gives you time to see what fits comfortably in your new apartment and decide what you truly want to keep. It can also help prevent multiple trips to the local donation center or the garbage bin.

Looking Ahead

As you prepare for your move into independent living, embrace the excitement and possibilities that lie ahead. This next chapter offers the opportunity to simplify daily life and enjoy new friends and experiences – all within a welcoming and supportive environment.

Bringing It All Together

As you work through the steps of preparing for your move, a thoughtful plan and a little support can make the process feel much more manageable.

Using visual cues will help you organize your new space and decide what to bring, sell, or donate. Take advantage of the help available to you, whether it's professional movers, organizers, or the support of loved ones. With their assistance, you can confidently navigate this transition and create a home that brings you joy and fulfillment. Get ready for an incredible new chapter in your life!

At Fellowship Square Mesa, technology innovation is something our community lives out every day. From smart apartments enabled with Alexa technology to real-time monitoring of air quality in common areas, we are committed to finding new ways to implement technology with the goal of improving seniors’ lives.

We are thrilled to share that our partner, Helpany, has earned national recognition at McKnight’s 15th Annual Excellence in Technology Awards for their groundbreaking project right here at Fellowship Square Mesa.

This proactive approach allows caregivers to respond quickly, preventing emergencies before they happen, while respecting the dignity and independence of residents in assisted living.

Positive Outcomes at Fellowship Square Mesa

70% reduction in falls within just two months

Fewer ER visits and hospitalizations

Over $200,000 in value delivered to residents and families in that same time frame

"The results at Fellowship Square Mesa show what’s possible when innovative technology and a forward-thinking care team come together.
At Fellowship Square Mesa, we are proud to set a new standard in fall prevention, resident safety, and proactive care.
We extend a heartfelt thank-you to Helpany for their partnership in bringing this vision to life. "Letters to Mom", A WWII Love Story Shared Through Generations

<![CDATA[
Living History: The Joy of Serving Those Who've Lived It

If you ask someone who works in senior living what they love most about it, you'll hear all kinds of answers. However, one answer stands out time and time again: the privilege of learning about history from the people who lived it. Our residents share stories of riding in the first automobiles, watching the moon landing on black-and-white TVs, and living through moments most of us have only read about.

As a retirement community, we're honored to serve seniors in a way that helps preserve, celebrate, and share their legacies - stories that continue to educate, inspire, and connect us across generations.

Honoring Family, History, and Service Through One Resident's Incredible Legacy

We recently had the honor of working closely with Tara Harper, the daughter of our longtime resident, Geraldine 'Gerry' Myers, on one such project.

Tara discovered a collection of heartfelt letters her father, Roy Meyer, wrote to her mother and family during World War II. With nearly 80 years of personal history in these letters, Tara compiled them into a moving book that captures his voice and legacy. The result is a moving tribute to her father titled "Letters to Mom: A World War II Soldier's Account of Sacrifice, Courage, and Love".

Michelle Herandez, Director of Resident Experience, shared, "We were so happy to work with Tara to help share this beautiful story with the wider Tucson community. Thanks to that collaboration, KOLD News 13 created a powerful segment highlighting the letters and the deep family connections behind them, including Geraldine's remarkable service during WWII as a U.S. Army nurse."

Tara's story is a touching tribute to two people who served their country in different but equally meaningful ways. It also serves as a tribute to a generation shaped by resilience, love, and service - and reminds us of the rich history that lives within our community.

Designed With Empathy, Taught With Experience: New Memory Care Training

<![CDATA[

More Than a Requirement, It’s a New Way of Caring for Those with Dementia

Exceptional memory care starts with exceptional training.

Shelly Drews of Help My Senior has developed a unique approach to memory care training that transforms how care is understood, delivered, and felt. This DHS‑approved training program is more than a checklist. It was created specifically for caregivers working in Memory Care and Directed Care communities.

Fellowship Square is honored to host the in-person classroom sessions at our Surprise and Mesa campuses, providing dedicated spaces for Shelly and her team to deliver the course effectively.

Why Memory Care Services Training Matters

Dementia diagnoses are growing at a rapid rate, reshaping the senior care industry. And with millions more expected to be diagnosed in the years ahead, our response must rise to meet that need. This training bridges the gap between task-based caregiving and person-centered, emotionally intelligent care. It empowers caregivers to:

Understand the brain changes behind behaviors

Communicate with empathy and trauma-informed awareness

Preserve the dignity and identity of every resident

Prevent burnout and reduce unnecessary challenges

Create a more peaceful, consistent environment for residents and staff

When caregivers are truly equipped with the knowledge, empathy, and real-world tools to support those living with dementia, everything changes. Residents feel safer, more understood, and emotionally supported. Caregivers feel more confident, less stressed, and more connected to their purpose.

Led by a National Dementia Care Expert

Shelly Drews, a nationally recognized dementia care educator with over 30 years of experience and credentials, including CDP, CADDCT, CMDCP, and more, developed this program. Her approach is insightful and led with compassion.
“This training is different because it’s rooted in love and backed by science,” says Drews. “We don’t just teach the facts, we empower caregivers to serve with compassion, emotional insight, and practical strategies that support dignity and connection. “And that’s where real outcomes live - in the moments when a resident smiles, a caregiver feels empowered, and a family finally feels hope.”

Meet the Instructors Behind the Mission

At its core, this training elevates how we care for and connect with individuals living with dementia. And it’s led by a passionate team that has 'walked the walk' in dementia care.

Alongside Shelly, Alicia Juarez, and Tawnya Christensen bring decades of experience, compassion, and leadership to every class. While each instructor brings a unique perspective, they share a common goal: to elevate the standard of dementia care through empathy, connection, and practical tools.

Alicia and Tawnya share the "why" that inspires their approach below.

Tawnya Christensen, Assisted Living Director, The Oasis at Fellowship Square Mesa

“My why is rooted in the words of Maya Angelou: ‘When we know better, we do better.’ My approach to training comes from a heart of empathy, mercy, and advocacy. By doing role plays, hands-on techniques, and tactile experiences to help the heart understand, that's when everything changes in how we think and approach. We all can benefit from putting ourselves in another person's shoes and learning compassion. I want to help others understand that EVERY MOMENT MATTERS!"

Tawnya Christensen Bio

Alicia Juarez, Assisted Living Director, The Oasis at Fellowship Square Surprise

“Early in my journey, during a time when dementia care often relied on chemical or physical restraints, I experienced my first ‘AHA’ moment. It was then I realized that what people with dementia need most isn’t control, it’s compassion, patience, and individualized care. That moment became my ‘why,’ and it sparked a lifelong mission to help others discover their own 'AHA' moment; to see the value of personal connection and individualized approaches.”

Alicia Juarez's bio coming soon!

Fellowship Square’s Ongoing Commitment to Memory Care Excellence

Fellowship Square is honored to provide classroom space for this AZDHS-compliant training program.

“The new memory care training requirements enforce what we’ve already been doing,” says Rhonda Thiel, Vice President of Operations, Fellowship Square Surprise. “This course honors different learning styles and equips our teams to provide higher quality, loving care - because that’s the result we all want.”

Program Overview

The curriculum consists of 8 one-hour modules taught in person at two Fellowship Square senior living communities. By incorporating essential concepts like emotional intelligence and trauma-informed care, and using practical behavior response tools, we reduce unnecessary challenges, prevent burnout, and create a more peaceful, consistent environment for residents and staff.

Ready to Learn More?

This training is open to anyone! It is where confidence grows, understanding deepens, and caregivers learn to approach dementia care with heart and purpose.

Bonus: Fellowship Square employees receive a discounted rate for the training course, making it even more accessible to those already living out this mission in their daily lives.

Finding Strength, Comfort, and Joy in Every Season

Life is a journey filled with joys, challenges, and moments that test our faith. As we age, we encounter new experiences - some beautiful, some difficult. The Word of God offers unwavering comfort and wisdom, whether navigating health concerns, learning to live with loss, or embracing change.

Having spent years working with seniors, I've seen firsthand how faith can be a strong anchor when the ocean of life is relentless. The Word of God provides encouragement and peace when it doesn't exist otherwise.

Over the years, there are verses we learn to embrace. Here are a few that have personally spoken to me and many of the residents we serve and are blessed to know.

When You Need Strength:

"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint." – Isaiah 40:31

There are seasons when we feel physically or emotionally weary. We get tired! We have all been there. There are moments when we feel like we just can't go on. But this verse reminds us that our strength is not just our own; it comes from the Lord. I've witnessed so many people who find renewed strength in their faith through prayer, fellowship, or simply trusting in God's plan.

When You Need Comfort in Loss or Change:

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." – Psalm 23:4

Life brings change; sometimes sudden, sometimes slow. I've sat with residents who have lost spouses, faced difficult diagnoses, or moved into a new season of life that felt unfamiliar. One resident once said, "I never expected to start over in my 80s without my spouse." We can never be prepared for all the changes life throws at us. Yet, in those moments, Psalm 23 reminds us that we are never alone. God's presence provides the peace, reassurance, and comfort we need.

When You Feel Anxious About the Future:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." – Philippians 4:6-7

Worrying is part of human nature, especially as we face uncertainties. But I've learned both in my own life and from the wisdom of many seniors that prayer is the antidote to anxiety. A resident once told me, "Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I just talk to God like He's sitting right next to me. And somehow, I always feel better." That simple act of trust changes everything. God is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). He will never leave you or forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6-8)!

When You Need to Be Reminded of God's Love for You:

"Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you." – Isaiah 46:4

Aging can sometimes bring doubts about purpose and worth. I am over five decades old, a little over half a century. I know gray hair! I see people become Centurions quite often. This verse is a beautiful reminder that God does not forget us as we grow older; He sustains us, carries us, and remains faithful. No matter the season, He walks alongside us with love and care. He is our provider, our safety, and our refuge. Never doubt God's love and affection. You are the apple of His eye, regardless of your age!

When You Seek Joy and Gratitude:

"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." – Psalm 118:24

One of the most incredible lessons I've learned from working with older adults is the power of gratitude. No matter what they've faced or how broken they feel, they wake up each day, happy! It's a choice they make. They find joy in small things - a conversation, a sunrise, a favorite song. God calls us to embrace each day as a gift, and when we do, we can find joy, even in the simplest moments.

Faith is a Lifelong Companion

Faith is not just for Sunday mornings or times of crisis; it is a daily source of strength, hope, and peace. Whether you've leaned on scripture your whole life or are just beginning to explore its wisdom, God will meet you wherever you are. He is always present. He is called the 'God of all Comfort' in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, "God is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

We pray these verses have been an encouragement and that they help you find strength and comfort for your journey. Regardless of what you're facing, remember, God is present!

Please feel free to download and share these Bible verses. Use them as a reminder of your own or share with others!
]]>
