Fellowship Square Mesa Reduces Resident Falls by 90%
How AI-Powered Technology Is Transforming Senior Safety and Wellness
At Fellowship Square Mesa, resident safety has always been a top priority. But in 2024, we made a groundbreaking shift in approaching fall prevention—by implementing an innovative AI technology called Paul, developed by Helpany. The result? A remarkable 90% reduction in falls within our assisted living community.
The Challenge: Breaking the Cycle of Falls
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, often resulting in hospital visits, long recovery times, and a loss of confidence. Our fall rates remained concerningly high despite consistent efforts—routine safety checks, resident education, and wearable alert devices.
“We were doing everything we could, and still going in circles,” explains Tawnya Williams-Christensen, Assisted Living and Social Services Director at Fellowship Square Mesa. “We knew we needed a proactive, not reactive, solution.”
Enter Paul: An AI Assistant That Prevents Falls Before They Happen
In mid-2024, we introduced Paul, a radar-based AI device from Helpany that doesn’t rely on cameras or microphones and requires no wearable tech for residents. Paul monitors subtle changes in movement patterns, gait strength, and sleep quality—key indicators that someone may be at increased risk of falling.
Here’s how it works:
- Paul continuously scans residents’ living spaces using radar technology
- It detects changes that indicate potential fall risk
- Real-time alerts are sent to staff smartphones
- Staff can intervene before a fall occurs
Paul also compiles weekly resident reports, helping our care team make informed decisions about support plans and interventions.
The Results: From 20 Falls to Just 2
Before introducing Paul, Fellowship Square Mesa averaged 20 falls per month in our assisted living neighborhoods. After implementation in July 2024, the numbers began to drop:
- July: 12 falls
- August: 6 falls
- September–November: 4 falls each month
- December: Only 2 falls
- January: Only 2 falls
- August through December: Zero overnight falls
“Paul gave us something we’ve never had before—early warning. That allows us to act before something goes wrong,” says Williams-Christensen.
Resident Trust and Community Buy-In
One key to success was our thoughtful rollout. We held multiple focus groups with residents, families, and staff. Presentations were customized for independent living, memory care, and assisted living, ensuring each resident group felt heard, informed, and respected.
“We took the time to answer concerns and build trust,” says Williams-Christensen. “And that made all the difference.”
Why This Matters
This isn’t just a story about technology—it’s a story about dignity, independence, and peace of mind. With Paul, our team can focus their energy on preventing incidents, not just responding to them. Residents feel safer. Families feel reassured. And our staff can deliver even more person-centered care.
Looking Ahead
Fellowship Square Mesa is proud to be a leader in using smart technology to enhance senior living. With the success of Paul in assisted living, we are now exploring its expanded use across our broader campus.
“This is an industry-changer,” Williams-Christensen says. “We’re not just reducing falls—we’re transforming how we care.”
